A rising star taken too soon
Kaylee Hottle, the deaf actress who brought warmth and visibility to the Godzilla franchise, died on July 21, 2026 in a single-vehicle car crash in Ijamsville, Maryland. The Maryland Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed on July 22 that her cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries, with the manner ruled an accident. She was 18 years old.
The crash
According to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, a 1995 Honda Accord traveling on a two-lane roadway left the right side of the road and struck a culvert around 2:52 a.m. on July 21. A 19-year-old driver and two passengers were in the car. The driver was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and a third occupant declined medical treatment at the scene. Kaylee Hottle was transported to an area trauma center, where she was pronounced dead.
The preliminary investigation indicates excessive speed contributed to the collision.

Representation and impact
Kaylee appeared in two Godzilla films as Jia, the young deaf girl whose bond with Kong helped anchor the franchise’s emotional core. Her performances were widely noted for their authenticity; she came from an all-deaf family spanning four generations.
In a 2024 interview with ABC7 New York, Kaylee said through an ASL interpreter, “Jia in the movie, she represents bravery. And I represent the Deaf community. And I also represent Asian Americans as well.”
On July 21, Millie Bobby Brown posted a tribute on social media following Kaylee’s death: “I’m so devastated to hear this. You will be deeply missed Kaylee.”
Life beyond the screen
Kaylee was a senior and student athlete at the Texas School for the Deaf. She competed in basketball, swimming, and track and field, and was named a Student-Athlete of the Month during the 2024-2025 season. Talent agency Japan’s Legends, which represented Kaylee, wrote in a July 21 Facebook tribute, “Beyond her acting, she was an amazing athlete and an outstanding academic. She had so much potential and could have been anything she set her mind to.”
